WarrenCHi. I'd be interested to know if the defensive strengths of British medieval castles have ever been 'quantified' as such, or comparisons made with one another in a 'Top Trumps' kind 'a way! I'm 'new to castles' and but have had a crack at trying to work out a way of comparing this and would be very grateful for input from those more knowledgeable if they would be so kind.
My system would be to assign points for various defensive features and simply total the 'score'. So.. natural defences such as cliff top, hill top, water defences- sea or lakes say could be worth up to say 5 points; lakes 3 points; moats 2; concentric walls 1 point per wall; round towers in walls 2; square towers 1, twin towered gatehouse 1; barbican 1; baileys 1 each; keep 1 or 2; local cathedral for cover for attackers -1. Any input would be much appreciated as if such a comparison hasn't been made before i think it's an interesting idea- and perhaps you could suggest whether you think my way of doing it makes sense and, if so, should i consider other features or adjust my point ratings.
Thanks very much. Warren.
